It’s true! And actually, your second vote is even more
powerful!
First Vote
Good old election time. When the candidate we vote for doesn’t win,
our vote seems wasted. It’s true. It’s a bummer. But this is all the more reason to make sure you and everyone you know
votes! The less we turn out, the more we
leave the direction of this country to people who don’t care about you and me!
This is also why the Green
Party of BC has conducted a major campaign for proportional
representation. This electoral system
will make governments far more
accountable to the electorate than we have ever seen. In fact, most democracies world-wide now
conduct their elections in this way!
Here is a little known
reality. Organizations, political or
not, gain credibility through memberships.
Donations and volunteer efforts are indispensable, but without a healthy
number of members, no one takes organizations seriously.
For example, one of the best
ways to support our environment is to join the Western Canadian Wilderness Committee. If you’re a student on a budget, ask for
their student rate! Concerned about civil
liberties and the erosion of our democracy?
Join the BC Civil Liberties Association! Always ask for student rates!
And, well, ditto for political parties. You don’t have to volunteer or donate, you
just have to join!
If there’s a party whose
issues you’d like discussed more in the media or the legislature, join that party! It’s that simple. Even other parties take notice of this
vote.
Ok. In a way, you have even more votes. What if you convince someone else to vote for
a party you think is on the right track.
What if someone votes, or even better, joins or volunteers because of
your words?
Well, this is why we’re in
UVic Greens. None of us is a politician,
but when we avoid politics because we think it’s sleazy, voila, sleazy people
get to run the show.
Politics needs people of
integrity like you and me. Be involved
as much or as little as you like. Help
us spread the word about the importance of “voting”! Come join the fun!
